Shocking video shows protesters attacking California Republican Larry Elder

Published by:

Shocking footage has emerged of California Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder being pelted with eggs by masked protesters as he walked through the streets of Los Angeles on Wednesday, local time. Numerous eggs were thrown at the group, who were walking through the Venice neighbourhood, including by an individual wearing a gorilla mask. The assailants hurled profanities at the group and menaced members of Mr Elder’s staff. The video does not make it clear if Mr Elder was hit with an egg. Californians will go to the polls on September 14 to vote on whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom. If the Democratic incumbent is recalled, Mr Elder, a libertarian-leaning Republican, is favoured to replace him.

Ida recovery: Landlords won’t be fined for illegal basement apartments

Published by:

Landlords will not be fined for operating illegal basement apartments in Ida-affected areas for the rest of the year, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday, as the city attempts to get residents displaced by the storm back into their homes. The deaths of 13 people, 11 of them in basement apartments and five of six which were illegal, according to the Department of Buildings, has prompted a crackdown on illegally subdivided apartments in the city. The city believes there could be as many 50,000 illegal basement apartments citywide, housing more than 100,000 residents.
