Julia Salazar is running to unseat incumbent Martin Dilan in the 2018 Democratic primary to represent Brooklyn’s District 18 in the New York State Senate. Salazar says she’s a Colombian immigrant and Jew-of-color. In fact, she’s neither—and the questions merely start there.
Salazar is running on a “socialist” platform, associated like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez–whom she conspicuously emulates–with the Democratic Socialists of America. But Salazar started political life as a very different creature: an evangelical Christian Zionist who defended Israel on behalf of Pastor John Hagee’s Christians United For Israel (CUFI).
In this 2012 interview, Salazar discusses anti-Israel professors at Columbia–agreeing with Beck that they are “Muslim Brotherhood and Communists”–who “[use] the classroom as their podium to spread lies about the State of Israel, to delegitimize the State of Israel, and to spread propaganda to Columbia students.”…..
