On November 8, 2023, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the state of free speech on college campuses.
The hearing was titled “Free Speech on College Campuses” and took place at 10:00 a.m. ET in the 2141 Rayburn House Office Building 1.
The hearing aimed to examine the current state of the First Amendment on American college and university campuses. It also aimed to examine the rise in antisemitism, anti-Israel sentiment, and violence towards students supporting Israel 1.
The hearing had several witnesses, including Jasmyn Jordan, a current student at the University of Iowa and chairwoman of Iowa Young Americans for Freedom, Amanda Silberstein, a current student at Cornell University and board member of Chabad Cornell, Kenneth Marcus, founder and chairman of the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Center for Liberty & Law at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School, and Connor Ogrydziak, a recent graduate of the University of Buffalo and former chairman of the University of Buffalo Young Americans for Freedom 1.
The hearing was disrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters, causing a delay of about five minutes4. Several protesters were removed from the hearing6. Despite the disruption, the hearing continued and aimed to address the important issue of free speech on college campuses.
