The Food & Fashion exhibition at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) explores the intricate relationship between food and fashion, shedding light on how both are central to our daily lives and serve as expressions of individual and cultural identities.
The exhibition features over 80 garments and accessories by renowned designers such as Chanel, Moschino, and Stella McCartney, showcasing how food has influenced fashion design from the eighteenth century to the present day.
The exhibition delves into critical topics such as luxury, gender, consumerism, sustainability, social activism, and body politics, demonstrating the multifaceted ways in which these genres are intertwined and what they express about our culture and society. Food & Fashion is co-curated by Melissa Marra-Alvarez, curator of education and research, and Elizabeth Way, associate curator of costume at MFIT. The exhibition is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT and The Coby Foundation, with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts and The New York State Council on the Arts.
The Food & Fashion Symposium, which accompanied the exhibition, featured preeminent food and fashion scholars, as well as designers, chefs, and artists, exploring the historical and contemporary relationship between food and fashion1234.
