New York Mayor Adams Announces City Hall, Municipal Buildings to be lit Green to Commemorate Mental Health Action Day

 – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced that City Hall and several municipal buildings will be lit green tonight in recognition of Mental Health Action Day — a global movement highlighting the importance of mental health and empowering participants to strengthen connection and community.

“Over the past decade, we have seen an alarming rise in anxiety and hopelessness among too many people, including young people here in New York City. This Mental Health Action Day, we not only recognize this serious problem but recommit ourselves to addressing it,” said Mayor Adams. “From offering free tele-mental health services to every New York City teenager, to bringing a landmark lawsuit against social media companies forcing them to change harmful, addictive practices, New York City is proud to be a national leader on this issue. I encourage every New Yorker to prioritize their mental health — not only today, but every day.”

“We mark Mental Health Action Day today by lighting up these buildings in green to bring awareness and to show our city’s solidarity with every New Yorker,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom. “Take time today to tend to your mental health, connect to supportive services, encourage young people ages 13 to 17 to sign up for NYC Teenspace, reach out to 988 for 24/7 support, or engage in everyday activities we know support our mental health, such as taking a walk outside, exercising, visiting with friends, and making these efforts a habit just as we do with other parts of our health journey.”

“New York City’s commitment to mental health is a 24/7, 365-day per-year mission. Yet, this day is an important opportunity to remind everyone that services and support are available,” said New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. “Resources like 988 or NYC Teenspace, for young people aged 13-to-17, can be a first step that is nothing short of lifesaving. Our buildings going green for an evening is an important symbolic gesture that is also being matched with tangible actions and strategies to promote a healthier city.”

“City Hall and municipal buildings are illuminated in green today for Mental Health Action Day during Mental Health Awareness Month, as New York City sends a powerful message of solidarity: Mental health matters for everyone,” said Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health Executive Director Eva Wong. “Green signifies growth, hope, and visibility, so as municipal buildings are lit up in green, we collectively light up our city with support and understanding. We affirm that seeking help is a courageous step towards healing and resilience.”

In addition to City Hall, the following municipal buildings will be lit up green tonight:

  • Bronx County Courthouse: 851 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451
  • Brooklyn Borough Hall: 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201
  • The David N. Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building: 1 Centre Street, New York, NY 10007
  • Queens Borough Hall: 120-55 Queens Boulevard, Kew Gardens, NY 11424
  • Staten Island Borough Hall: 10 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10301
