Wednesday is usually the day when New Yorkers realize that Friday is still inconveniently far away. Fortunately, Manhattan has prepared a distraction.

Books and Jazz in Bryant Park

Bryant Park offers two programs at 12:30 p.m., apparently trusting New Yorkers to be in two places at once.

At the Reading Room, the Endless Summer literary program features authors Cara Bastone, Amy Ewing, Jennifer O’Brien and Edward Schmit.

At the same time, pianist Russ Kassoff performs jazz, standards and swing on the Upper Terrace behind the New York Public Library.

You can begin with books, migrate toward the piano and later explain that this was your carefully planned cultural itinerary.

A Free Evening at the Museum of the City of New York

The Museum of the City of New York stays open for free from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Visitors can explore the museum’s current exhibitions, including Another Wonderland, which presents a restored New Deal–era mural cycle featuring characters from Lewis Carroll’s stories exploring 1930s New York.

It is a good opportunity to study how New York survived previous decades—and perhaps pick up a few ideas for surviving the current one.

Chinese Arts Week Takes Over Lincoln Center

Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City begins its Chinese Arts Week with several free performances across the campus.

The evening schedule includes:

• 6 p.m. — MindScape by Shen Wei Dance Arts and Guangdong Modern Dance Company at Hearst Plaza;
• 7 p.m. — Awakening Lion + Yingge Dance at The Dance Floor;
• 7:30 p.m. — experimental electronic music by Ian Chang at the David Rubenstein Atrium;
• 7:30 p.m. — Future Stars, featuring young artists from the NYC Public Schools Summer Arts Institute at David Geffen Hall;
• 8:30 p.m. — Chinatown Records Block Party.

The program mixes traditional lion dancing, contemporary performance, electronic sound and classical music. In other words, Lincoln Center has scheduled more culture in one evening than some cities manage in an entire fiscal year.

Most programs are free. A free Fast Track reservation may be available for priority admission, while some events use general admission.

Angelica Schuyler in a Time of Revolution

At 7 p.m., Bryant Park presents Angelica Schuyler in a Time of Revolution, part of its nonfiction lecture series produced with New-York Historical.

The program examines the life and political world of Angelica Schuyler Church, a member of the influential Schuyler family and a close friend of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.

It offers political arguments, personal rivalries and revolutionary drama—essentially social media, but written with quill pens.

Technology and Interactive Art

Enter the Digital World at Mercer Labs

Mercer Labs describes itself as a Museum of Art and Technology. Its 36,000-square-foot space contains 15 experimental rooms combining enormous projections, sound environments, robotic displays and interactive installations.

Visitors do not simply stand in front of the art. They walk through it, touch it and occasionally wonder whether the room is watching them back.

• Last entry: 6:45 p.m.

• Admission: paid; prices vary by time slot
• Recommended time: approximately 60–90 minutes

Art and Film at MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art offers several programs on July 22, including the participatory Wish Quilt activity and two film screenings.

At 7 p.m., MoMA presents Wayne Wang’s 1982 independent film Chan Is Missing, an influential mystery-comedy following two San Francisco taxi drivers searching for a missing man.

Standard museum admission includes the galleries and special exhibitions:

City & State’s 2026 Top Workplaces

City & State New York hosts its 2026 Top Workplaces reception and awards ceremony at Casa CeCe.

The program recognizes employers from government agencies, nonprofits, technology companies and private businesses. The reception also offers an opportunity to meet professionals working around New York government, public policy and business.

A Big Paid Concert at Madison Square Garden

Phish at MSG

Phish performs at Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m.

The band is known for improvisational performances, so even people who have attended many Phish concerts cannot say exactly what will happen. Neither can the musicians, which is part of the attraction.
