New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a passionate plea for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to hold its 2024 convention in the city, calling it the “biggest stage in America.” Speaking at a rally in Times Square on Wednesday, Adams highlighted the city’s vibrant culture, diversity, and history as reasons why the DNC should choose New York as its host city.
“New York is the only city in America where the Statue of Liberty sits in this harbor that’s representative of what this country is,” Adams said. “Nowhere else on the globe is there a country that has ‘dream’ attached to its name. Only America has the word ‘American Dream.’ We are the only one that dream is attached to its name, and that dream is lived out in New York City.”
Adams emphasized that New York City is a place where dreams are made and forged, and a city that represents the heart and soul of the country. He pointed to the city’s rich history as the birthplace of women’s rights and a woman’s right to choose her body, as well as the proud LGBTQ+ community that is represented here.
Adams also highlighted the city’s infrastructure, including the best hotels, convention centers, and support for unions, as reasons why New York City would be an ideal host city for the DNC.
“Let them hear it in D.C., let them hear it in all the other cities. Where is the best place to have the DNC?” Adams asked the crowd. “New York. New York, New York. It is so nice, they named it twice.”
Adams ended his speech by noting that New York City is a resilient city that has recovered from devastating attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic. He called on his colleagues in the city, Albany, and Congress to come together and show how big this amazing city is.
“This is our opportunity on the biggest stage on the globe to highlight those things that are important as we move forward in the years to come,” Adams said. “Let’s bring the DNC to the biggest stage in America. And that place is called New York City. Bring it home.”
The rally was attended by a diverse group of New Yorkers, including union leaders, LGBTQ+ activists, and business owners. Many expressed their support for Adams’ call for the DNC to come to New York City.
“I think New York City would be the perfect place to hold the DNC,” said Mark Smith, a local business owner. “It’s a city that represents the best of America, and I think it would be a great way to show the country and the world what we stand for.”
The DNC is expected to choose a host city for its 2024 convention in the coming months. Other cities that have expressed interest in hosting include Houston, Philadelphia, and Miami.
