“Fighting. With Aloha.” Hawaii Democratic Congressional Candidate Knocked Out in Viral Beach Confrontation

Kirill Basin was arrested on two terroristic-threatening charges after a dispute over loud music allegedly escalated into threats, a beach-chair attack and claims that a knife was produced. His attorney disputes key parts of the police account.

A Democratic candidate for Congress in Hawaii has become the subject of a viral video after a beach dispute ended with the candidate swinging a chair—and another man knocking him to the ground.

Kirill Basin, 40, is running in the Democratic primary for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. His campaign promotes the slogan “Fighting. With Aloha.” After the confrontation at Maui’s Keawakapu Beach, that slogan acquired an unintended and highly literal meaning.

According to the Maui Police Department’s account reported by Hawaii News Now, the incident began when a 61-year-old beachgoer asked Basin to lower the volume of his music.

Police allege that Basin responded by implying that he had a firearm and threatening to shoot the man’s wife. The dispute then escalated as other people at the beach intervened.

Viral Video Shows Chair Swing and Knockout

Video circulating across social media shows Basin confronting several people and swinging a beach chair toward a man who had stepped into the dispute.

The man blocks the chair and strikes Basin, who falls backward over beach furniture and appears to lose consciousness.

The man, identified only as Kama in a Hawaii News Now interview, said he works in construction and has mixed-martial-arts training. He said he intervened because Basin was becoming increasingly aggressive toward people at the beach.

Kama said Basin shoved him and swung the chair before he responded with two punches.

“Just block it and go for the KO,” Kama told the station while explaining how he reacted to the chair.

Police Allege That Basin Produced a Knife

The most serious allegation concerns what police say happened during or after the physical confrontation.

Police allege that Basin produced a knife and threatened multiple people before throwing the weapon into the ocean. Kama said the object was a switchblade with a blade approximately five inches long and that he later recovered it and gave it to police.

Basin was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening. A judge kept his bail at $1 million during his court appearance.

Defense Disputes the Knife Allegation

Basin’s attorney, Brandon Segal, emphasized that the charges remain allegations and that his client is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

Segal also disputed the claim that Basin possessed a knife or firearm, arguing that neither weapon is visible in the videos that have circulated online.

“These are just allegations,” Segal said. He also described the $1 million bail as excessive.

No verdict has been reached, and the criminal charges have not been proven in court.

Not the Candidate’s First Arrest During the Campaign

The beach incident follows another serious encounter involving Basin earlier this year.

In May, the Maui Police Department announced that Basin had been arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening after allegedly entering a county building while brandishing a firearm and confronting county employees.

Police said the incident followed an earlier confrontation at a South Maui town hall from which Basin had been escorted by officers. Those allegations also do not constitute a criminal conviction.

Political Campaign Meets Viral Reality

Basin’s campaign website presents him as a lawyer, business owner and former corporate executive seeking to bring accountability and cooperation to government.

The site repeatedly uses variations of the phrases “fight. aloha.”, “Fighting. With Aloha.” and “Living here. Fighting here.”

The viral video now gives those words a meaning the campaign almost certainly did not intend.

The political question is no longer merely whether Basin can win a crowded Democratic primary. It is whether a congressional campaign can survive repeated arrests, a $1 million bail order and millions of social-media users watching its candidate get knocked to the ground during a dispute that allegedly began with a request to turn down the music.

For the moment, Basin remains a candidate—and the allegations remain unresolved in court.

But in the court of viral public opinion, the verdict arrived almost instantly.
