Mamdani’s “Talk With The People” Focuses on Subways, Child Care, Housing and LGBTQ+ Policy

3 min read

NEW YORK — August 5, 2026. Mayor Zohran Mamdani used the latest episode of City Hall’s Talk With The People livestream to mix a personal conversation about New York City life with questions about his administration’s policies.

The episode featured Bernie Wagenblast, the longtime voice behind many New York City subway announcements. Much of the conversation focused on Wagenblast’s career, the subway system, and the experience of living and working in New York.

Mamdani also answered questions about his first months as mayor. He said one of the biggest surprises has been New Yorkers’ continued willingness to believe that city government can improve their lives, citing road repairs, child care, worker restitution and tenant organizing. He said one of the hardest parts of the job is meeting families after tragic losses.

On policy, Mamdani highlighted several priorities:

  • 2-K child care: He said the city is beginning with roughly 2,000 free child-care seats for 2-year-olds and intends to expand the program to 12,000 seats next year.
  • Transgender health care: Mamdani defended a $15 million city investment in gender-affirming care and discussed the administration’s new Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs.
  • Affordable housing: He repeated his commitment to build 200,000 affordable homes over 10 years and said the city wants to accelerate construction on publicly owned land.
  • Homelessness: Mamdani pointed to supportive-housing projects for formerly homeless New Yorkers and argued that the city must substantially increase housing construction.

The livestream was less a traditional press conference than a conversational City Hall program: part profile of a familiar New York personality, part audience Q&A, and part promotion of the Mamdani administration’s policy agenda.
