American forces struck Iranian military installations and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units after an Iranian missile and drone attack killed two U.S. service members in Jordan.
The United States military has launched a powerful retaliatory response against the Iranian forces responsible for attacking American troops in Jordan.
U.S. Central Command announced that American forces completed another round of strikes against Iran late on July 18, marking the eighth consecutive night of U.S. military operations.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes hit Iranian coastal surveillance installations, air-defense facilities, maritime military capabilities, and storage sites holding missiles and drones.
American forces also directly targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units that CENTCOM says were responsible for attacks against U.S. personnel in Jordan on July 17.
Deadly Iranian Attack in Jordan
CENTCOM confirmed that two American service members were killed in action while U.S. and partner forces were defending against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones in Jordan.
Another American service member remained missing in action as of the latest official statement.
Four injured service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan and were later discharged. Other personnel treated for minor injuries returned to duty.
The identities of the fallen service members were temporarily withheld until their families could be notified.
The attack represented a serious escalation: Iranian forces were no longer merely threatening American positions or using affiliated groups to apply pressure. According to the official U.S. account, Iranian ballistic missiles and drones directly targeted forces operating alongside an important American regional partner.
Washington’s Response Was Immediate
The retaliatory strikes were completed at approximately 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time on July 18 under the direction of the commander in chief.
CENTCOM described the purpose of the operation as continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to conduct further military attacks.
The targets were not limited to the units involved in the Jordan attack. American forces also struck the larger military infrastructure supporting Iran’s missile, drone, air-defense and maritime operations.
This suggests that the U.S. response was designed to accomplish two objectives simultaneously:
First, punish the IRGC forces connected to the attack on American troops.
Second, reduce Iran’s ability to launch additional attacks across the region.
CENTCOM did not publicly disclose the precise locations of every strike, the weapons used or the number of Iranian casualties. It also did not claim that every IRGC unit involved had been completely destroyed.
What the command did confirm was that the responsible IRGC forces were targeted and that important components of Iran’s military infrastructure were successfully hit.
More Than 50,000 American Personnel in the Region
More than 50,000 U.S. military personnel are currently operating across the Middle East, according to CENTCOM.
The command said American forces remain vigilant and prepared for further military action.
That force posture gives Washington the ability to conduct sustained air, naval and defensive operations while protecting American bases, ships, personnel and regional partners.
It also sends a direct warning to Tehran: attacks on American troops will not be treated as isolated incidents without consequences.
Part of Operation Epic Fury
The continuing strikes form part of Operation Epic Fury, the American campaign ordered by the president against Iran’s military and security apparatus.
CENTCOM states that the operation prioritizes Iranian locations presenting an imminent threat to the United States and its partners.
The latest attack in Jordan has now given that campaign an even more immediate purpose: protecting American forces and preventing additional Iranian missile and drone attacks.
A Clear Message to the IRGC
The message from the United States is increasingly unmistakable.
The Iranian regime may launch missiles and drones, but the American response can reach the surveillance systems, air defenses, maritime forces, weapons warehouses and military units supporting those attacks.
The United States has not announced the end of the operation. On the contrary, the eighth consecutive night of strikes indicates that Washington is prepared to continue applying military pressure.
For the families of the American service members killed in Jordan, no strike can undo their loss.
But the response demonstrates that the attack was neither ignored nor answered symbolically. The forces blamed for attacking American troops were placed directly in the sights of the U.S. military.
As of July 19, the conflict remains active, the risks of further escalation remain serious, and one American service member is still missing.
But one principle has been made clear: when the IRGC attacks American troops, the United States reserves the right to strike back—and to strike hard.
