The global pandemic has had a significant effect on the livelihood and wellbeing of workers in the nightlife industry in New York City. When the industry shut down abruptly due to COVID-19, many workers experienced sudden unemployment, loss of income and community, exposure to illness and grief. Throughout the last 12 months, they have been on the frontlines to the city’s re-opening as public health protocols allowed some businesses to re-open. These constant changes and demands on the industry have led workers to experience a collective trauma, which can aggravate or lead to new mental health challenges. Now, workers are charged with bringing back the city’s thriving nightlife, but they may bring with them lingering and new mental health concerns. How can we promote the mental health of workers in an industry that underpins our local economy by giving space to connection and creativity?
