What happens when Muslims take over an American city? Pro-Hamas parades, animal sacrifice, burqas, a ban on LGBT flags, Arabic signs, male and female entrances to Mosques, restrictions on music lessons in schools, the call to prayer blasting over loudspeakers; Strolling the streets of Hamtramck, Michigan, one can hardly recognize that this was once a mighty American industrial center. A new GB News documentary with US Correspondent Steven Edginton explores how Islam has transformed America’s only Muslim-majority city.
Hamtramck is famously known as ‘the world in two square miles’ due to its highly diverse population. The city is home to or has been home to many nationalities including Bosnians, Poles, Bangladeshis, African Americans, French, Germans, and Yemenis.
Until a few decades ago, Hamtramck was predominantly Polish. One resident mentioned it was common to speak only Polish, read local Polish newspapers, use Polish banks, and attend one of three Polish churches. Today, only one of those churches remains, replaced by numerous mosques.
In recent years, conservative Yemeni Muslims have increasingly moved into Hamtramck. The city made history in 2021 by electing the first all-Muslim city council and mayor in the United States. This marked a significant shift from a century of continuous Polish political leadership, with no Poles remaining in local government.
