Trump Issues Sharp Warning to NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Over Tax Hikes and Free Enterprise

Trump Warns Mamdani USA news

President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, arguing that higher taxes, anti-business policies, and promises of government-funded benefits could weaken the city’s economy and drive away the companies that support New York’s tax base.

Speaking during a press event featured by Forbes Breaking News, Trump was asked about his recent comments on communism and free enterprise. He said the message was “very meaningful to a lot of Americans” and argued that communist-style political promises often begin with popular slogans but end in economic decline, violence, and social disorder.

Trump said politicians can easily win support by promising free rent, free housing, free food, and relief from everyday bills. But he warned that such promises are not sustainable. According to Trump, the end result is “death, destruction, and squalor.”

The president then turned directly to New York City and Mayor Mamdani. Trump said he personally likes Mamdani and described him as “a very nice person” and “a smart guy,” but said he does not understand why the mayor believes it is acceptable for major companies that pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes to leave the city.

Trump’s core argument was that New York cannot maintain its services, safety, infrastructure, or quality of life if its tax base collapses. He warned that if companies and high-income taxpayers leave, the city will eventually face severe economic consequences.

“You’re not going to have any tax base,” Trump said, warning that New York could “end up in hunger and squalor and death and destruction.”

Trump contrasted what he called the appeal of free-government promises with the more difficult task of defending free enterprise. He said free enterprise is “tougher to sell,” but argued that it is the system that made the United States successful.

The president also linked the issue to public safety, pointing to cities such as Washington, Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. He claimed that strong enforcement and federal support helped reduce crime and restore confidence in Washington, D.C., and Memphis, while criticizing Democratic leaders in Chicago and other cities for resisting federal intervention.

Trump said Washington, D.C., has become safer and more vibrant, with restaurants reopening, parks restored, and public spaces improved. He argued that similar action could improve other major cities, but only if local and state officials cooperate.

The remarks reflect a broader political fight over the future direction of New York City. Mamdani has promoted a progressive agenda focused on raising taxes on the wealthy and expanding public benefits, while Trump is framing the debate as a choice between free enterprise and what he describes as economically destructive socialism or communism.

For New Yorkers, the central question remains whether higher taxes can fund city services without pushing businesses, investors, and residents out of the city — or whether Trump’s warning about a shrinking tax base will become a defining issue in the city’s political future.
