From live jazz and hip-hop to dance, outdoor movies and family programs, New York City offers plenty of free entertainment on Friday, July 31, 2026.

New York can be expensive, but some of the city’s best summer experiences cost nothing. On Friday, July 31, residents and visitors can attend concerts, dance performances, fitness classes, children’s programs and outdoor movie screenings across all five boroughs.

Midtown Tribune selected 10 notable free events taking place in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

Some programs require advance registration or distribute free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors should check the official event page before traveling because outdoor programs may be changed or canceled due to weather, air quality or other conditions.

1. Open Orchestra Rehearsal at Lincoln Center

Classical music lovers can watch the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center prepare for its evening performance of “A Mother’s Love.”

Conducted by Jonathan Heyward, the program includes works by William Grant Still, Jessie Montgomery and Johannes Brahms.

Unlike a conventional concert, an open rehearsal gives visitors an opportunity to see how professional musicians and a conductor prepare a major orchestral program.

2. Free Live Piano Performance in Bryant Park

Pianist Isaac ben Ayala is scheduled to perform on Bryant Park’s Upper Terrace as part of the park’s free piano series.

The daytime concert is expected to include jazz, ragtime, stride piano and classic New York melodies.

Visitors can listen from one of the park’s tables, bring lunch or combine the performance with a visit to the nearby New York Public Library.

3. Explore the Hudson River at Pier 57

The Hudson River Park’s Discovery Tank offers an interactive introduction to the wildlife and ecology of the Hudson River.

The program is particularly suitable for families with children. Visitors can also explore the public rooftop park at Pier 57, which offers views of the Hudson River and Lower Manhattan.

4. Children’s Storytime in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Public Library will host a free summer storytime program for children and their families in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

After the program, families can walk along the waterfront and enjoy views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and Lower Manhattan skyline.

5. West African Dance Workshop with Alvin Ailey

Lincoln Center and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will offer a free dance workshop accompanied by live drumming.

Teachers from Ailey Arts in Education will introduce participants to elements of West African dance while exploring the relationship between movement, music and cultural tradition.

No previous dance experience is required.

6. Hip-Hop Legends Perform in Crotona Park

One of the largest free events of the day will take place in the Bronx, where SummerStage will present a hip-hop park jam honoring JDL of the legendary Cold Crush Brothers.

The announced lineup includes Doug E. Fresh, Funk Flex, Cold Crush Brothers, T-Ski, Keni Burke, The Soulsonic Force, DJ M U and additional performers.

The concert celebrates New York hip-hop history in the borough where the culture was born.

7. Free Waterfront Workout in Brooklyn

FORM Fitness Brooklyn will lead a free Movement in the Park workout on Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The one-hour class will focus on bodyweight exercises and can be adapted for different fitness levels.

No specialized equipment is required, although participants may want to bring a workout mat or towel.

8. BAAND Together Dance Festival

Five of New York City’s leading dance organizations will share the stage during the free BAAND Together Dance Festival at Lincoln Center.

• New York City Ballet

9. Poetry and Music at the David Rubenstein Atrium

Poet and curator Mahogany L. Browne will conclude her Lincoln Center residency with an evening combining poetry, live music, conversation and community engagement.

The program, titled “See Ya Soon, Mahogany L. Browne Party,” will take place indoors, making it a useful alternative in the event of rain or extreme heat.

10. Choose a Free Evening Event: Silent Disco or Outdoor Movie

Several free evening programs are scheduled in different boroughs.

Silent Disco on the Bay in Queens

Participants will receive wireless headphones and dance to music transmitted directly to the headsets.

The program is open to families. An identification card may be required to borrow headphones.

SummerStarz Outdoor Movie in Greenpoint

The free SummerStarz movie series continues at WNYC Transmitter Park in Greenpoint.

“Greenland 2: Migration” on Staten Island

A Free Full-Day Manhattan Itinerary

Visitors who want to spend the entire day in Manhattan can begin with the 10:30 a.m. orchestra rehearsal at Lincoln Center.

From there, they can travel to Bryant Park for the afternoon piano concert, visit the Discovery Tank at Pier 57 and then return to Lincoln Center for the Alvin Ailey dance workshop, the BAAND Together festival or the poetry and music program at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

Those looking for an outdoor evening can instead attend the Crotona Park hip-hop concert, exercise in Brooklyn Bridge Park, dance at the silent disco in Queens or watch a movie under the stars.
